The Customer

Alois Berger GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in Memmingen, is part of the internationally active Berger Group. As a renowned supplier, the company develops and manufactures high-precision parts and complex assemblies—in production runs ranging from small to very large—for a wide variety of technical applications across various industries.

The Berger Group is recognized worldwide for its exceptional manufacturing quality, innovative strength, and high level of automation in production.

Project: New Construction with a Climate-Controlled Manufacturing Environment and Vertical Intralogistics

As part of a comprehensive plant expansion, Berger constructed a new multi-story building designed to meet specific climatic requirements. Temperature, humidity, and air purity are tailored to the sensitivity of the components being manufactured.

To ensure a smooth flow of materials between the old and new buildings, as well as within the new building, two systems were used:

  1. An automatic vertical conveyor system for pallets and special load carriers

  2. An additional freight elevator to provide redundancy and a direct connection to the loading ramp

Both systems were designed in accordance with fire safety regulations and also serve as logistical checkpoints between floors.

Technical Concept – Vertical Conveyor System & Freight Elevator

Automatic Vertical Conveyor System

  • Handling of: Pallets and Special Load Carriers
  • Integration: Connection to air-conditioned areas and inventory logistics
  • Function: Fully automatic layer change based on defined environmental parameters
  • Fire Safety: F90 airlock doors at the passageways, automatic locking
  • Pallets: For wooden or plastic Euro pallets and Düsseldorf half-pallets

Freight elevator with passenger transport

  • Purpose: Redundant access to all floors; connection to goods receiving and shipping areas
  • Usage: Manual loading is possible during maintenance or in the event of a vertical system failure
  • Design: Rugged construction for continuous in-plant operation
  • Fire Safety: Shaft and access points are protected in accordance with fire safety regulations

Conclusion

With the system at Berger Memmingen, SCHÖNAU implemented a high-performance, fire-safety-compliant solution for high-precision manufacturing environments. The combination of automated conveyor technology and a conventional freight elevator ensures maximum operational safety, flexibility, and process reliability—a project that sets new standards for future-proof intralogistics in the high-tech sector.
