A special project has been successfully completed: A custom-designed freight elevator was installed in the controlled area for the decommissioning of the Grohnde Nuclear Power Plant. The system will facilitate the safe transport of dismantled and cut-up components in transport containers for radiation testing and disposal during the decommissioning work.
This is already the second facility of this kind in the area, and SCHÖNAU was able to draw on its experience from the first facility of this type at the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant.
Once again, the main challenge lay in careful project planning and execution in collaboration with the on-site customers. All components had to be designed so that they could be brought into the reactor building as manageable individual parts and then assembled in the controlled area.
For activities in this sensitive environment, SCHÖNAU holds the necessary authorization under Section 25 of the Radiation Protection Act for work at third-party nuclear facilities.
This project demonstrates once again how important well-thought-out design, precise manufacturing, and effective project management are for technically challenging custom solutions.

And there’s more: Another elevator with a significantly greater lifting height is already in the planning stages and is scheduled to be installed in the fall of 2026.
